Choosing the Right Steel: Why Q355 + Q460 Matters in an Excavator Bucket

2026-08-17

An excavator bucket works under constant impact, abrasion, and heavy loads, so material selection plays a critical role in bucket durability and performance.

For our heavy-duty excavator buckets, we use a combination of Q355 and Q460 steel according to the stress and function of different components. The main bucket structure is made from Q355 steel, which offers good toughness, low-temperature resistance, and excellent weldability. This allows the bucket body to absorb impact and vibration during digging, loading, and other demanding earthmoving operations, helping reduce the risk of cracking caused by repeated stress.

For reinforcement ribs, ear plates, and other high-stress areas, we use Q460 high-strength steel, with a yield strength of ≥460 MPa. Its higher strength provides better resistance to deformation, helping critical connection points remain stable under heavy-duty excavation work.

The result is a balanced excavator bucket design: Q355 provides toughness where impact absorption matters, while Q460 provides higher strength where structural reinforcement is required.

This material combination helps our excavator buckets achieve a practical balance of durability, structural safety, service life, and cost, making them suitable for demanding construction and earthmoving applications.
